CHILDHOOD AND FAMILY
Whilst never a tearaway or a particularly rebellious child, Dougal Hogarth was never very motivated either. He drifted through school, dropping out at the age of sixteen, and started working at a local hotel. His siblings and parents are very academic and driven, so Dougal always felt like the black sheep, and thus became even less motivated as he was certain nothing he achieved would ever match their accomplishments anyway.
He’d have girlfriends, though was never passionate about them, and always had friends, though none were particularly close. For the most part, Dougal Hogarth was always aimless and not really concerned about it.
RELATIONSHIP WITH LILLY
Meeting Lilly changed Dougal Hogarth’s life.
When he first meets her, whilst she and Saffron are sneaking out of the hotel, he is immediately fascinated by both girls, however he is particularly drawn to Lilly. When he sees them later, waiting for Coral in Tea and Times, he is again interested in Lilly and senses something peculiar going on when Coral arrives.
It is seeing Lilly crying outside the antiques shop, owned by Opal, that seals his interest in her. He even goes so far as to lie to parents out of a perceived loyalty he has to her, despite being aware of their fear for their daughter’s safety.
When he sees her walking to the beach, surrounded by the coven, he allows his interest in her to take over and he follows. This leads to his kidnapping by the coven as they suspect him to be the apprentice of the Harvester.
Whilst held captive, it is then that Hogarth discovers both magic and Lilly’s own power. He is terrified and amazed, and when Lilly steps in to defend him and protect him, ultimately ensuring his life is saved after Sam tries to kill him, he begins to understand how powerful she is, although for the first time in Lilly’s life this is not why he was interested in her initially.
When the fight is over and Hogarth is healed, he tells Lilly how he did originally have feelings for her but is now too overwhelmed by the world she is part of to do anything about it. However, much as he swears never to mention magic, or Lilly, again, his interest has been firmly piqued and it is not something he can walk away from so easily.
